Organization: America's Health Insurance Plans
Date of Publication: October 2007
AHRQ Product: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Recommendations
Topics: Prevention, Policy
Scope: National
Summary: Members of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) use the USPSTF recommendations to help inform choices about benefit design and prevention programs. With more than 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage to over 200 million Americans, AHIP is the largest trade association of the Nation's health insurers. AHIP featured the USPSTF in the January/February 2007 issue of AHIP Coverage: Health Care News, Views, Trends, and Insights. The AHIP magazine article covered the history of the USPSTF and included a detailed explanation of the recommendation process. The article also featured invited commentary on the value of USPSTF recommendations to insurance providers (available at http://www.ahip.org/content/default.aspx?bc=31|130|136|18744|18747 Exit Disclaimer ).
Background: Over the past 6 decades, AHIP and its predecessor organizations have sought to represent a "unified voice" for health insurance plans. Based in Washington, DC, AHIP advocates for affordable, high-quality health care coverage through its work on the legislative, regulatory, and policy issues facing the industry. AHIP also seeks consensus on the broader health care issues facing the Nation, including the need to cover millions of uninsured Americans. Organization: Wichita State University College of Health Professions
Date of Publication: April 2008
AHRQ Products: USPSTF Recommendations, Electronic Preventive Services Selector (ePSS)
Topics: Academic Curricula, Prevention, Health Information Technology (IT)
Scope: Kansas
Summary: In the "Preventive and Behavioral Medicine" course for physician assistant students at Wichita State University, Associate Professor Timothy Quigley, MPH, uses the USPSTF recommendations as the foundation of his curriculum. For nearly 13 years, Quigley has used USPSTF materials-initially providing hard copies of the recommendations as part of his classroom resources. As the formats for the distribution of the recommendations have expanded, student resources have multiplied, too. As of early 2008, each student receives the pocket guide to the most current USPSTF recommendations. Because students are required to carry personal digital assistants, each student is also encouraged to download the Electronic Preventive Services Selector for use at patients' bedsides.
Background: Founded in 1972, Wichita State University College of Health Professions offers the only physician assistant program in the state of Kansas. Of the more than 1,000 graduates of the program, 52% are working in primary care settings and 15% in underserved areas.

Organization: New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Date of Publication: August 2008
AHRQ Product: USPSTF Recommendations
Topic: Prevention
Scope: New York
Summary: The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has incorporated USPSTF recommendations into the development of materials for an educational outreach program, known as Public Health Detailing. This program was designed to help primary care providers improve patient care relating to key public health challenges. The program is organized around specific clinical topics, chosen largely because of their anticipated impact on morbidity and mortality. Each campaign targets a limited number of key recommendations, rather than a full set of guidelines. The USPSTF recommendations were used in all campaigns except colon cancer screening. In that instance, the local recommendation was more stringent than the USPSTF recommendation.
Background: The Public Health Detailing Program is part of the Department's Division of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Clinical Systems Improvement Unit. All materials from this program are publicly available. For more information on the Public Health Detailing Program, visit: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/csi/csi-detailing.shtml. Exit Disclaimer
