What: The U.S. National Archives is proud to be a partner of Wikimania, the annual international conference of Wikimedia. Wikimania 2012 takes place in Washington, D.C. and is organized by Wikimedia D.C. The editing community of Wikipedia and its sister sites and the general public meet to share their experiences with free knowledge initiatives all over the world. Major themes will include open government and collaboration with cultural institutions.

U.S. National Archives 2.0: Citizen Archivist Dashboard Demo
What: The U.S. National Archives launched its Citizen Archivist Dashboard in December 2011. The dashboard is a hub for the Archives’ crowdsourcing initiatives, including tagging, transcription, digitization of records and more. Citizen archivists, staff archivists, students and researchers together share insights and manpower to make the records and America’s history more accessible to all. Join us for a demonstration of the various collaboration tools in the dashboard and discussion of how the dashboard fits into the Archives’ online strategy.

Citizen Archivist Dashboard: Let’s Get Tagging
What: Calling citizen archivists and would-be citizen archivists for a tag-a-thon! Contribute to the tagging missions in the U.S. National Archives’ Citizen Archivist Dashboard. Explore and tag fascinating historical documents, photographs, and multimedia held by the Archives. Help make these materials easier to discover online through the Archives’ online catalog, Flickr, and Wikimedia Commons. How many tags can you add in an hour?

GLAMcamp DC
What: GLAMcamp DC is a meeting/workshop for Wikimedians active in outreach to cultural institutions in the United States. This will be a workshop for a small group of community-focused and technology-focused Wikimedians to continue to solidify the key elements of the glamwiki.org project, with special focus on the United States.

7th Annual William G. McGowan Forum on Communications, Technology and Government
What:What’s on the cutting edge of digital communications and social media, and what’s the big picture? The 7th Annual William G. McGowan Forum on Communications, Technology and Government will explore new opportunities and ideas for social media affecting the private, government, and public sectors and the average citizen. Moderated by Alex Howard, the Government 2.0 Correspondent for O’Reilly Media, panelists include Macon Phillips, White House Director of New Media, Pamela S. Wright, Chief Digital Access Strategist at the National Archives, and David Weinberger, Senior Researcher, Harvard Berkman Center for Internet & Society. A Social Media Fair and reception will take place in the theater lobby prior to the program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with staff demonstrations of some of the latest social media tools.

Are You In? Citizen Archivists, Crowdsourcing, and Open Government
What:At the National Archives, we’re always trying to think of new ways to make our historical records more accessible to the public. We have only a small fraction of our 10 billion records online, so it’s clear we’ve got to get creative. It’s vital that we learn how other institutions address this challenge, and we heard about three innovative projects from this event:
- World Archives Project from Ancestry.com
- Map Warper Project from the New York Public Library
- North American Bird Phenology Program from the U.S. Geological Survey
