DCoE/DoD Sports Collaborations

DCoE fosters dynamic collaborations with major league sports organizations and academic institutions to further the state of knowledge on concussion; to combat the stigma associated with seeking psychological health treatment; and to share knowledge gained through research activities.

National Football League (NFL)

  • The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) collaborates with the NFL to discuss and explore a wide variety of clinical and scientific aspects of mild TBI
  • Ideas for advances in helmet design
  • Research and information exchange helped inform the latest revisions in concussion guidelines for both NFL and DoD
  • Neuropathology studies from recurrent concussions of NFL players help identify the importance of managing recurrent concussions
  • Public Service Announcements with Former NFL players and warriors help effect cultural change, by raising awareness about TBI and encouraging those affected by it to reach out for help
  • DoD ex officio representative on NFL Concussion Committee
