CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today declared October 2012
as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois to educate

FIRST CENTRAL ILLINOIS HUMAN WEST NILE VIRUS CASES
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health is
reporting the first human West Nile virus cases in central
Illinois for 2012. Both cases are from Peoria County; a woman in
her 30s and a man in his 50s.

AVOID CONTACT WITH BATS
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, state public health
director, is reminding people to avoid contact with bats as this is
the time of year when bats are the most active and health officials
see the most bat exposures.
FIRST WEST NILE VIRUS RELATED DEATH REPORTED IN ILLINOIS
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public
Health is reporting the first West Nile virus related death in
Illinois for 2012. A DuPage County man in his 70s, who had
underlying health conditions, was diagnosed with West Nile virus
earlier this month and died last weekend.
MULTISTATE SALMONELLA OUTBREAK ALERT
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public
Health is alerting the public to an outbreak of Salmonella
Typhimurium linked to cantaloupes grown on one farm in southwestern
Indiana.
IDPH CONFIRMS ADDITIONAL H3N2V FLU CASES
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public
Health (IDPH) laboratory has confirmed a total of three cases of
what is known as the H3N2v influenza virus. IDPH is working with
local, state and federal health officials to reduce the spread of
this virus, but additional cases are possible, therefore it is
important to take preventative steps.
Notice of Proposed Class Action Settlement
CHICAGO – This notice sets
forth the basic terms of the proposed settlement reached in the class action
case of Lauren Grey, Victor Williams, and Nicholas Guarino v. LaMar
Hasbrouck, pending in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois,
number 11 CH 17091, concerning the denial of certain applications of
transsexual persons to change the sex designation on their existing Illinois
birth records.

Health is awarding almost $3.5 million in We Choose Health grants to
communities ready to take on the challenge of reducing heart

health departments and the general public statewide, the Illinois
Department of Public Health unveiled
IQuery, or Illinois Query,
an interactive, community health data portal.
WHOOPING
COUGH CASES INCREASING IN ILLINOIS
SPRINGFIELD – Health care providers are reporting
a large increase in the number of pertussis cases, commonly called
whooping cough, in Illinois and across the country. To kick-off
National Immunization Awareness Month this August, the Illinois
Department of Public Health is reminding parents and health care
providers of the new pertussis immunization requirement for the
2012-2013 school year.
