Online Careers & Training Resources

Welcome to the Genomic Careers Resource

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has developed this interactive tool to help students explore the possibilities of finding a fulfilling and rewarding career in a Genetics or Genomic-related field. It is also designed as a resource for counsellors and teachers.

Through the use of interactive video, this unique tool allows students to listen to professionals explain what they do and what they find inspiring about their work. With many of the interviews, students can choose which question they would like to ask and they take a tour of some of the most cutting-edge facilities in the United States. The interviews and tours are conducted in a fun, light-hearted and engaging manner.

To help students keep track of the fields they like, the site features a "Career Tracker" which allows students to rate the careers. The system then makes recommendations for career paths to investigate.

In addition to the video, the site includes:
  • A robust database of career profiles filled with specifics about each career. Careers in the database can be rated, just like the videos, to help give students a more complete perspective.

  • Links to related careers, and related videos so students can easily explore the types of fields they find appealing.

  • For those who would like to have some fun, the Genomics Challenge shows randomly-generated videos of students who give hints about what genomic-related career they are pursuing and students must figure out their chosen field.

  • An extensive list of resources so that students can continue exploring areas of interest.

Through the inspiring videos and career profiles, students will get a sense of what steps to follow if they are interested in a particular career. This includes guidance on specific degrees to pursue, classes to take or jobs that will set them on the right path toward the career of their choice.

For educators and counselors, the site also includes a lesson plan and detailed instructions on how to get the most from this site.
