HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the final installment
in a series of biweekly payments totaling more than $276 million to
59 children’s teaching hospitals to help them educate and train the
nation’s physician workforce.
The fiscal year 2002 payments are intended to provide financial support
for independent children’s teaching hospitals similar to that provided
through Medicare to other teaching hospitals. Because independent children's
teaching hospitals do not serve the elderly, they receive virtually
no graduate medical education funds (GME) through Medicare, which supports
more than 1,000 other U.S. teaching hospitals with more than $7 billion.
HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration oversees the children’s
hospitals GME program.
“Our children deserve the best medical care available,” said Secretary
Thompson. “We can help assure a brighter future for America’s kids by
appropriately supporting high-quality medical training for pediatricians
and other pediatric specialists who lead the fight against childhood
illnesses.”
Independent children’s teaching hospitals provide clinical care to
young patients, conduct research, and educate and train resident physicians.
These hospitals train about 30 percent of the Nation's pediatricians
and almost half of pediatric specialists, and devote nearly half of
their patient care to children who are covered under Medicaid or are
uninsured. More than 75 percent of the children who receive care at
these hospitals have one or more chronic conditions.
The Healthcare Research and Quality Act, which was enacted on Dec.
6, 1999, created the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education
program.
