Regions

Region is a concept that is used to identify and organize areas on the Earth's surface for various purposes. A region has certain features that make it unique and set it apart from other regions, e.g. oranges grow only in specific regions of the Earth.

Regions can be used to organize places on the basis of the presence or absence of selected physical and human-related features. Physical features could be yearly rainfall, temperature, wind conditions, etc. while human-related features might consist of transportation networks, population density, potential customers, etc. Regions can be at a local level (e.g. within a city) or at a global level (e.g. climate regions). Regions and the process of regionalization (how regions are formed) are important concepts in geography.
