The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Initial Review Group (IRG), administered by the NHGRI Scientific Review Branch, provides first-level peer review of grant applications. The review committee is called the Genome Research Review Committee - known officially as GNOM-G - and meets three times a year.
Applications reviewed by the IRG Genome Research Review Committee include (but are not limited to):
- Special projects for constructing genetic and physical maps
- Determining DNA sequences
- Developing methods for analysis of genomic DNA including computational approaches
- Developing innovative technologies
- Developing and maintaining tools and resources such as genome databases
- Supporting training and career development opportunities and workshops and conferences in genome research
NHGRI provides a second level of review by the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research.
The majority of investigator-initiated grant applications related to genomics research (e.g. R01) are reviewed by National Institutes of Health (NIH) Initial Review Groups organized by the NIH Center for Scientific Review [csr.nih.gov].
