In January 2008 Janis Mullaney joined the National Human Genome Research Institute as their executive officer. In this position, Ms. Mullaney oversees the institute's administrative management functions including budget, information technology, and human capital management. As a senior leader of the institute, Ms. Mullaney maintains the organization's infrastructure so research can proceed.

Ms. Mullaney joined the federal service in 1971 with the then Bureau of Drugs of the Food and Drug Administration. In 1981, she came to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and held several positions as administrative officer at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. In 1999, she worked for Dr. Michael Gottesman, as the Intramural Management Liaison Director for the NIH.

From September 2000 to October 2004, Ms. Mullaney was with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). She initially held the position of Associate Director for Management with NCI's Office of Management, and in February 2002, the NCI director appointed her acting executive officer for the institute.

In October 2004, Ms. Mullaney retired from federal service and joined the Foundation at NIH as a senior advisor for public-private partnerships, and played a key role in developing collaborations between institutes with a disease-centric mission and interested outside organizations and funders.

A Washington D.C. native, Ms. Mullaney has a B.S. in Business Management, and an M.B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, College Park.
