Continuing Medical Education (CME) Opportunities

Until recently, most practicing healthcare providers had limited genetics and genomics education and training in their undergraduate and graduate educational programs and clinical training. Practicing healthcare providers will increasingly need to use genetic and genomic knowledge and information to meet the needs of their patients and families. Genetics and genomics CME programs are being created to meet this need. This section provides a listing of genetics and genomics CME opportunities for physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Genomics and Disease Prevention [cdc.gov]
Training and Education from the Centers for Disease Control.

  • The New Geneticstm: Medicine and the Human Genome [twistedladdermedia.com]
A CD-ROM course for physicians produced by Twisted Ladder Media.

  • National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG) [nchpeg.org]
See a related Human Genome News article on NCHPEG.

  • Genetics and Your Practice [marchofdimes.com]
A comprehensive curriculum for physicians and other health and social service providers.

  • Genetics in Clinical Practice: A Team Approach [iml.dartmouth.edu]
Offered by Dartmouth University's Interactive Media Laboratory, this downloadable course based on the "Virtual Practicum" model is intended for health care providers where knowledge of clinical genetics can positively affect outcomes. Note: This course is offered free by download with a high-speed internet connection. NHGRI does not endorse, encourage or require purchasing this product.

  • Summer Genetics Institute (SGI) [ninr.nih.gov]
The Summer Genetics Institute (SGI) is a one-month intensive research training program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, sponsored by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). The SGI provides a foundation in molecular genetics for use in research and clinical practice.
