Human Microbiome Program

Nanomedicine Program

As Program Director for Technology Development Coordination, Dr. Schloss serves as a resource on technology development for the Division of Extramural Research at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and manages a portfolio of grants across a range of nucleic acids-related technologies — in particular the $1,000 genome sequencing technology development program. He also works with the Human Microbiome Program and coordinates the Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science program.

Dr. Schloss joined NHGRI in 1992 to serve as program director for centers that were building genetic and physical maps of human and model organism genomes, and then helped NHGRI initiate its large-scale sequencing pilot projects before he transitioned to the technology development program. He has coordinated interdisciplinary programs in bioengineering and nanotechnology research across National Institutes of Health (NIH) and U.S. federal science agencies.

Dr. Schloss received the NIH Director's Award in 1997, 1998 (twice), 2004, 2006 and 2008. He earned his B.A. degree in biology from Case Western Reserve University in 1973, and his Ph.D. in cell biology from Carnegie Mellon University in 1979.
