Postdoctoral Positions at NHGRI

Postdoctoral Position in Bioinformatics and Comparative Genomics

Department of Health and Human Services
National Institutes of Health
National Human Genome Research Institute
Genome Technology Branch

A postdoctoral training position is currently available in the Genome Technology Branch (GTB) of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The position is located in the laboratory of Jim Mullikin, Ph.D., whose current research program capitalizes on the use of comparative genomics approaches to answer important questions in disease research. The laboratory participates in a wide variety of collaborative projects, performing genomic variation analysis, disease mutation discovery, RNA sequence analysis, and computer algorithm development using sequence data from the latest technologies. The Mullikin Lab is co-located in the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center (NISC) in Rockville, Md. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to access data from the newest sequencing methods in a rapidly changing field. In addition, the laboratory has access to state-of-the-art, high-performance computing systems.

Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics, or a closely related field. Candidates with a keen interest in computer algorithm development are particularly encouraged to apply. The position requires a high level of proficiency in programming skills, and experience in the application of computational methods to genomic data is highly desirable. Applicants must possess good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken and written English. Strong skills in the use of new computer software, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work semi-independently are required.

The intramural Research at NHGRI program offers a wide array of training opportunities for scientists early in their careers. The funding for this position is stable and offers the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of their research project. The successful candidate will have access to NHGRI's established and robust bioinformatics infrastructure, as well as resources made available through NIH's Center for Information Technology (CIT), the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and NISC.

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a detailed letter of interest, and the names of three potential referees to Dr. Mullikin at mullikin@mail.nih.gov or to the address below.
