Reduce Your Risk of Stroke

The Basics

Am I at risk for stroke?
High blood pressure is the most important risk factor for stroke.

High blood pressure has no signs or symptoms, so be sure to get your blood pressure checked at least once every 2 years. Ask your doctor if you need to get it checked more often.

Other risk factors for stroke include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Physical inactivity and obesity
  • An irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation)
  • High cholesterol

You are at greater risk for stroke as you grow older. Stroke can also run in families, so it’s important to know your family medical history.
