Arkansas
The Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area on the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests encompasses roughly 11,000 acres in northwest Arkansas. The tree-covered wilderness includes oak, hickory and shortleaf pine.
Montana
Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area in Idaho and Montana encompasses more than 1.34 million acres. Below the ridges are deep canyons covered with thick coniferous forest while old-growth cedar, fir and spruce are found in the lower valleys. This view is from the Stevensville, Mont., Ranger Station on the Bitterroot National Forest.
New Hampshire
A camera pointed toward Mount Washington, N.H., and other equipment are used by the Forest Service to measure air quality. A bonus is the ability to see the changing fall colors on the White Mountain National Forest.
North Carolina
The Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness Area located on the Cherokee National Forest is extremely steep and rugged, with a dense hardwood forest blanketing the slopes. More than 100 tree species can be found in the wilderness area, including tulip poplars that are more than 300 years old.
West Virginia
The 17,371-acre Dolly Sods Wilderness on the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The region is known for its extensive rocky plains, upland bogs and sweeping vistas. In the lower elevations, you'll find a forest of northern hardwoods and laurel thickets.
