In October 2011, Karen DeLeon became the Director of Ethics for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). In this leadership position within the NHGRI Office of the Director, she co-directs the planning, administration and implementation of the NHGRI Ethics Program. In doing so, Ms. DeLeon is the primary point of contact on all employee ethics issues relating to the conflict of interest statutes and the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch.

Ms. DeLeon joined federal service in 1994 at the Department of Energy, and then landed at the NHGRI in 1997, where she served in various positions within the Office of the Director. After serving as NHGRI's Ethics Coordinator for over four years, she joined the National Institute on Aging to lead their ethics program under the leadership of the Executive Officer. In 2010, Ms. DeLeon returned to NHGRI where she plays a key role in assuring the NHGRI Ethics Program is carried out in accordance with all applicable ethics statutes, policies and regulations.
