Violence Against American Indian and Alaska Native Women: Section 904 Task Force

The Office on Violence Against Women established a task force [1] to provide feedback on NIJ's proposed program of research, to review study findings, and to help guide implementation of recommendations stemming from program activities and research. The task force comprises representatives from:

  • National tribal domestic violence and sexual assault nonprofit organizations.
  • Tribal governments.
  • National tribal organizations.

The task force was established by the Attorney General on March 31, 2008. Seventeen members were appointed and will serve until March 31, 2010. The representatives have met a total of four times. [2]

During the last meeting, held on December 1, 2009, task force members provided NIJ with their draft recommendations for moving forward with the Violence Against American Indian and Alaska Native Women research program.

On March 31, 2010, the AG approved the rechartering of the task force. OVW requested nominations for the rechartered Task force in the summer of 2010. Task Force member appointments are forthcoming. The first meeting of the new task force is expected to convene in early 2011.
