The Cyber and Electronic Crime Strategic Policy Project
Policymakers and other officials need to stay informed of advances in digital forensics so that they understand the potential impact of these advances on electronic crime policies.
Since 2006, NIJ and the National Governors Association (NGA) have worked together to build the capacity of state policymakers in the field of e-crime and digital forensics. The Cyber and Electronic Crime Strategic Policy Project, managed by NGA and funded by NIJ, provides research and technical assistance with the implementation of evidence-based policies. The project builds upon the expertise of officials representing key organizations and a variety of disciplines, including policy and law enforcement.
The Cyber and Electronic Crime Strategic Policy Project aims to:
- Increase awareness of electronic crime issues and identify key areas of interest among policymakers.
- Enhance law enforcement's capacity to keep pace with advancing technologies.
- Investigate solutions to cyber and electronic crime.
- Provide recommendations to NIJ for research on, and development and evaluation of, current and future electronic crime trends.
- Host various workshops on new technologies and policy implementation.
- Help states adopt innovative approaches to electronic crime investigations and prosecutions.
Through this project, the NGA Center for Best Practices will produce resources that target an audience of policymakers. The center will:
- Commission two papers that explore — in plain language — new and emerging technologies and their potential implications for state and national policy.
- Host two national webcasts.
- Convene an executive policy forum for governors' advisors and other state policymakers.
- Provide technical assistance to governors' offices.
