Federal lands are those lands owned or administered by the Government of the United States. The Federal Government is responsible for managing and protecting these lands. Some federally administered land features are linear, such as national parkways and wild and scenic rivers.

A national parkway includes both the roadway and the parkland paralleling the roadway. All parkways are intended for scenic motoring along a protected corridor and often connect cultural sites. The six national parkways are administered by the National Park Service.

The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act preserves selected rivers in free-flowing condition and protects those rivers and their immediate environments for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System is primarily administered by four Federal agencies: the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and USDA Forest Service. These agencies are charged with protecting and managing the wild and scenic rivers of the United States.

The Federal Land Features of the United States - Parkways and Scenic Rivers map layer shows the linear Federal land features of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Descriptive information includes the feature name, the type of Federal land, and the administering agency. This map layer was compiled by the National Atlas of the United States®.
