The Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy’s Small Business Profiles for the States and Territories supplies data on small businesses in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This publication provides national-level data, with limited data on the U.S. territories. It provides great detail about small businesses at the state level. The following topics are covered: the number of firms, demographics of business ownership, small business income, banking, business turnover, industry composition, and employment gains and losses by size of business. Detailed historical data may be found in the Small Business Economy. The state and territory profiles are available in Adobe PDF or Excel spreadsheets.

County Business Patterns annually provides sub-national economic data by industry and by county and zip code. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll. These data are useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; for analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for other statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. The data are useful for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, and developing budgets. Government agencies use the data for administration and planning. Business patterns by ZIP Code are available shortly after the release of county business pattern data. Among the information available is the number of employees per business, detailed categories of industries in the U.S., and analyses of economic activity based on individual businesses in a ZIP Code.
