Map of PERU

This spring, teenage girls from northern Peru will have the chance to participate in a camp designed to help them realize their full potential, and local authorities will have the opportunity to learn about implementing and co-execute a youth-centered event sure to engage and impact one of their most prioritized populations. During the course of one weekend, some 50 girls will be introduced to new points of view, strong female role models and peers with different life experiences.

This event addresses a main goal area for local authorities: helping youth construct a successful future, which is no easy task. In rural areas, the amount of time teenage girls must dedicate to household chores leaves little left over for personal reflection or learning from and sharing with peers. Rates of teen pregnancy are also high, and girls who become pregnant before finishing high school are almost certain to stop attending classes and never return.

Sessions about sexual health during camp empower participants to make smart decisions. Activities designed to guide girls through the process of investigating and choosing a career introduce realistic possibilities for continuing studies after high school. By helping girls envision a successful future and encouraging them to believe in their ability to achieve, we increase the chance that they persevere and navigate through their challenges.

The region's department for youth initiatives has recently prioritized offering youth retreats and fostering volunteerism among university students. By working with Peace Corps, the department will put on a camp that is interactive, reaches student by including non-formal education techniques designed to engage the girls' participation, leave a lasting impression, and come away will new ideas about how to measure and monitor the event's impact.
