For Native American Communities

Indian Tribes and organizations supporting Native American communities have been successfully drawing upon national service resources for more than 40 years.

In the past seven years, nearly 25 percent of Federally recognized Tribes have successfully teamed up with the programs of the Corporation for National and Community Service to address family and community needs in a culturally appropriate manner. These programs deal with such critically important issues as:

  • Assistance to Elders
  • Cultural preservation
  • Job training
  • Economic development
  • Health and wellness
  • Youth education and leadership
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Traditional lands preservation.

In the 2007-2008 program year, the Corporation invested approximately $12.5 million to support 146 Native-related projects in 33 states, both on and off reservations. Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps NCCC, and Learn and Serve America participants—many of them Native Americans themselves—currently are serving Indian communities from the Hawaiian Islands to Maine and from Alaska to Florida.

The Corporation is committed to working closely with Tribal Governments and others to increase support to Indian communities. To underscore that commitment, the Corporation has a Strategic Advisor for Native American Affairs, who works across all program and support units to increase Native America participation in national service and to develop and enhance programming to address the unique needs of Native American communities.

This section of the website describes the ways the Corporation is involved in strengthening Native communities. It also provides links to fact sheets, program lists, funding resources, and a variety of other useful materials.
