Benefits of a Policing Research Platform

A longitudinal platform from which to study policing will give both executives and researchers the ability to:

  • Collect standardized, validated data on the work force as a whole and on the agency as an organization. Examples of how the data will be used include helping executives and field training officers understand how recruits adapt to their work environment, helping academy instructors understand what makes a good officer and helping police leaders understand why officers leave the force.
  • Compare agencies of similar size and type. Chiefs or sheriffs in similar situations will be able to compare operations and the effectiveness of their departments.
  • Test new programs, policies and procedures. Measure their effectiveness against accepted benchmarks.
  • Test new theories of policing and organizational behavior. Researchers will be able to analyze platform data across multiple agencies to examine the factors that shape individual and organizational outcomes.
