Background Information
Sample Map The Forest Cover Types map layer shows the broad distribution of various tree types found in the United States and Puerto Rico. It was compiled jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service , Forest Inventory and Analysis Program. These agencies work together to collect general forest cover information for the United States. Forest cover information is derived from satellite images and data and is used for forest resources planning and analysis. The 1974 Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act requires the USDA Forest Service to report on the forest resources of the United States. Forest Cover Types is an image showing the distribution of 25 classes of general forest cover as well as water and nonforest land, in the United States and Puerto Rico. It was produced using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) composite images and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data from the 1991 growing season.
