    Michele J. Sison, a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 29, 2012 as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Republic of Maldives.

  • Statement on the Passing of Former Ambassador Christopher Van Hollen

    February 5, 2013: The Embassy wishes to send our condolences to the family of Christopher Van Hollen, former Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives. Dr. Van Hollen passed away in Washington, DC on January 30 at the age of 90. Mr. Van Hollen was U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives in 1972-76. Dr. Van Hollen was born in Maryland and served as a naval officer in World War II before pursuing an undergraduate education at Haverford College and a doctorate in political science from Johns Hopkins University.  

  • U.S. Embassy Boosts Maldivian Maritime Safety and Security

    January 31, 2013: Ambassador Michele J. Sison spoke at the handover ceremony for the Maritime Surveillance System in Male, Maldives on January 31. This surveillance system will be used to collect data from seven Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) installed along major Maldives shipping channels and is a commercial system consisting of shore based receivers and transponders.  

  • U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretaries to Visit Sri Lanka and Maldives

    January 19, 2013: Deputy Assistant Secretary of State James Moore, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Vikram Singh, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jane Zimmerman will travel to Sri Lanka and Maldives from January 26-February 1, 2013.  

  • U.S. Introduces Marine Protection Program in Maldives

    October 19, 2012: The U.S. Department of the Interior will introduce an Integrated Marine Protected Area Management program on October 21 and 22 in Male’. The program is part of the Department of Interior’s International Technical Assistance Program and will highlight how to protect the long term sustainability of the marine resources of Maldives. It is being developed for Maldives in partnership with the Maldives Marine Research Center (MRC) and the Maldives Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

  • United States Conducts Coconut Grove 2012 Exercises with MNDF

    October 5, 2012: From October 4-14, the United States Marine Corps and Maldivian National Defense Force will participate in Coconut Grove 2012, a bilateral, biannual exercise on Gan Island. The recurring, ongoing exercise will increase mutual understanding and enhance professional and amicable relations between the two militaries. The exercise will focus on general military skills and enhancing interoperability between the two forces, and will help advance common regional security interests between the U.S. and Maldives.  

  • U.S. Green Card Lottery Open for Applications

    October 2, 2012: The U.S. Embassy in Colombo is pleased to announce that the 2014 Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery Program, popularly known as the Green Card Lottery, will be accepting on-line applications starting on October 2, 2012. The Diversity Visa Lottery allows 50,000 randomly selected applicants an opportunity to legally live and work or study in the United States each year, so long as they are selected and are born in a qualifying country (Sri Lanka and the Maldives both qualify) and that they meet either an educational or work experience qualification.
