NHLBI Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan is structured around three goals that reflect the successive movement of scientific discovery – from "form to function" (Goal 1), "function to causes" (Goal 2), and "causes to cures" (Goal 3). The crosscutting, versus disease specific, approach helps to better determine where the NHLBI is well positioned to make major contributions through investigator-initiated research and through programs that enable and complement investigator-initiated activities. Implementation of the plan is an ongoing, living process incorporating benchmarks and evaluation, customized to meet the specific opportunities of each scientific field, its investigators, and the concerns of those affected by diseases whose study is in our mission. Plan updates are incorporated into the Strategic Plan by the Institute in consultation with its Advisory Council and involvement of our many constituencies.
