Gallery Archives
The Gallery Archives preserves and makes available non-current historical records of the National
Gallery of Art and related historical materials. It is the primary source of information concerning past activities and events at the National Gallery of Art, and for the design and construction of its buildings. Among frequently used materials are:
- Subject-classified Central Files, 1939–c.1970
- Press releases, 1939–present
- National Gallery of Art exhibition and related publications
- Architectural designs, plans and models for the West Building and East Building
- Oral histories with participants and observers of the Gallery history
- Photographs of Gallery events, architecture, and personalities, c.1937–1990
- A Guide to the Gallery's World War II Research Resources (PDF 72k) (Download Acrobat Reader)
- Records of commissions and specially selected works of art for the East Building, 1971–1981
- Records of exhibitions held at the National Gallery of Art, 1941–1997
- Papers of David E. Finley, former director of the National Gallery of Art, 1915–1977
- Records of the Index of American Design, 1934–1942
- Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection Files

researchers in accordance with National Gallery of Art rules and requirements.

Hours
The Gallery Archives is open for research Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except federal holidays, by appointment.
