The NHLBI celebrates National Wear Red Day 2012

Dr. Susan Shurin - February 3, 2012

February 3, 2012 is National Wear Red Day. To celebrate those who help advance heart disease research and care every day, the National Institutes of Health held a special event. The celebration was made possible with support from the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, the Foundation for the NIH, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. An audio-described version of this video has been provided for screen reader users and others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_S8b79qEi4.

Today is National Wear Red Day® 2012. Take a look at the photos streaming in to the NHLBI's The Heart Truth® Facebook page from across the country showing many of the people who are truly taking this observance to heart.

Here on the NIH campus, we held the first National Wear Red Day "flash mob." Led by passionate staff members, we gathered in the NIH Clinical Center to send a thank-you message to the incredible teams—scientists, doctors, nurses, clinical trial participants, educators, volunteers, and many others across the country—who are working to advance heart disease research and clinical care. You can view the video above or on YouTube. If you watch closely, you may recognize members of the NHLBI team among the dancers (including me).

Please share the video—or make your own!—with your colleagues, friends, and families to continue to spread the message that heart disease is largely preventable.

This afternoon's heart health Twitter chat was another successful first-time event. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, representatives from HHS's Million Hearts, and representatives from the American Heart Association joined NHLBI Office of Global Health Deputy Director Dr. Cristina Rabadán-Diehl and me for a "live tweet" event where we engaged in heart-healthy conversations in both English and Spanish. So far we have counted 1,300 tweets about heart health, including one from Congressman Steny Hoyer, who named us as a "Follow Friday" recommendation. You can follow the discussion at https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23heartchat.

February has more events in store as we continue to observe American Heart Month. Please join us in spreading the word about The Heart Truth and supporting the scientific research and clinical care that permit Americans to live longer, healthier lives.
