Background Information
Sample Map Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel resource in the United States. The primary use of coal in the United States is for generating electricity. Information on coal resources collected by the U.S. Geological Survey is used by government, industry, and public decision-makers who assess and manage the energy resources of the Nation. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, Eastern Energy Resources Science Center (EERSC). The EERSC gathers information, conducts research, responds to emergencies and disasters, and produces scientific reports and other products for a variety of users. The Coal Fields of the United States map layer shows areas in Alaska and the 48 conterminous United States that contain significant coal deposits. Descriptive information includes the coal field name, type of coal, and its minable potential.
