Our nation has a unique legal and political relationship with Indian tribes and Alaska Native entities as provided by the U.S. Constitution, treaties, court decisions and federal statutes. Within this government-to-government relationship, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs provides services directly or through contracts, grants, or compacts to to 564 federally recognized tribes with a service population of about 1.9 million American Indian and Alaska Natives.

To learn more about how Interior is working in partnership with tribes, the tribal-government services we are providing, or to contact Indian Affairs, visit the Bureau of Indian Affairs website.

Also, Tribal governments who contract with the Federal government are allowed administration costs for administering federal contracts and grants. This is accomplished through an indirect cost negotiation agreement.  To learn more about the Interior agreement process, visit Indirect Cost Services, National Business Center.
