Defense Logistics Agency Logistics Operations and U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command leaders discussed improvements to service and support in the military health system Oct. 9 during a meeting at the McNamara Headquarters Complex.

Army Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dowd, DLA Logistics Operations director, and his staff met with USAMRMC Commander Army Maj. Gen. James Gilman to find ways to expand the partnership between the two organizations.

“Partnering and collaborative efforts between DLA and USAMRMC are vital to improving service and support to the warfighter and the military medical community,” Dowd said.

USAMRMC is the Army's medical material developer, responsible for the service’s medical research, development, acquisition and logistics management. Headquartered at Fort Detrick, Md., the command has 11 subordinate commands located throughout the world.

As the Department of Defense medical material executive agent, DLA establishes strategic and operational relationships to help drive system integration for effective and efficient medical supply chain support within DoD. The meeting served to further strengthen this strategic partnership with USAMRMC, Air Force Lt. Col. John Brooks, DLA Logistics Operations medical commodity manager, said.

DLA’s supplier networks and acquisition processes position the agency to support DoD’s medical system with direct order and delivery of medical items and pharmaceuticals from commercial suppliers.

A performance-based agreement outlines the partnership between DLA and the Army to extend best business processes such as medical assemblage management, installation support to U.S. Army Forces Command units, theater support to deployed medical forces and more.

The two organizations agreed to continue improving effectiveness and efficiency of shared services, minimize unnecessary redundancies, and look for ways to control and reduce military health care costs.
