Auction Announcements

You can find out when Treasury securities will be auctioned by viewing the recent announcements of pending auctions listed below, the financial section of most major newspapers or the online press releases.

The announcements are generally released several days before an auction. The exceptions are the Treasury's Cash Management Bill and 4-week bill announcements. The time between the announcement and the auction of these securities is considerably shorter compared to other Treasury announcements.

An auction announcement details:

  • Amount of the security Treasury is selling
  • Auction date
  • Issue date
  • Maturity date
  • Terms and conditions of the offering
  • Customers eligible to participate
  • Noncompetitive and competitive bidding close times
  • Additional pertinent information.

Once an auction is announced, you may submit your bid for the security you want to purchase. You can bid directly through TreasuryDirect or make arrangements to purchase securities through your broker or financial institution. You can find detailed information regarding Treasury's announcements in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at 31 CFR Part 356

Auction Announcements

Public Debt posts recent announcements of pending auctions and previous announcements with results (by auction) on its website.

Quarterly

The Treasury Department holds a press conference, which usually occurs on the first Wednesday in February, May, August, and November to discuss marketable security auctions and tentatively announces the auction schedule (PDF) for the upcoming six month period. During a press conference, the Treasury may also announce other decisions relating to the auction schedule or Treasury marketable securities in general. Information on the quarterly announcements can be found on the Treasury Department's website.

Reinvestment Announcements

For customers of Legacy Treasury Direct, reinvestments will be available for 13-week and 26-week Treasury bills, and for maturing 52-week bills being reinvested into 13-week and 26-week bills. To allow customers who hold maturing securities to schedule their reinvestments in a timely manner, Treasury informs its Legacy TreasuryDirect account holders approximately 45 days in advance of an eligible marketable security offering. (NOTE: Legacy Treasury Direct is being phased out. Reinvesting and purchasing within the program will end after the auctions on October 22, 2012.)
