Striker named to top Denali National Park post

Two first-timers have Second Saturday art shows

Two Talkeetna artists are having their first solo gallery shows for the Second Saturday Art opening December 8th. Doug Gaultieri’s photography of the natural world will be at the Dancing Leaf Gallery through December, and Jennifer Birdsall’s surreal photographic imagery will be at the Flying Squirrell from now until February. KTNA’s Lorien Nettleton spoke with the two artists by phone and has this story.

Six-piece Talkeetna super-group to open for John Lee Hooker Jr.

Before John Lee Hooker Junior’s 8 piece band takes the stage at the Senior Center Sunday night, six of Talkeetna’s most loved musicians will be on stage for a heck-of-an opening act. Lorien Nettleton spoke with Steve Durr over the Phone, and then met with Howard Carbone to find out what the Weepin Willies had cooking for Sunday night.

In search of community recycling solutions in rural Mat Su

The decision to recycle in Rural Mat Su borough is not an easy undertaking. Residents who want to divert recyclable items from the quickly-filling landfill and make the most of reusable resources like aluminum and paper currently take it upon themselves to separate those items and save them up for weeks-or months until they have a trip planned south to Palmer or Anchorage, where the nearest recycling facilities are.

JSCF grants a grand gift to the Food Pantry

John Lee Hooker Jr to illuminate a dark winter night in Talkeetna

John Lee Hooker Jr first performed in Anchorage at the Blues Fest in 1999 with Bo Diddly and Ike Turner. He’s been coming back to Alaska every year since, and after this year’s visit, he will be coming to the Northern Susitna Valley for a benefit concert at the Upper Susitna Senior Center. KTNA’s Lorien Nettleton caught up with Mr. John Lee Hooker Jr. to talk about his tour and his new album, All Hooked Up, which was released in September.

Local pic makes it in to Weather Service contest

Talkeetna Photographer Greg Morgan’s photo of Denali glowing in the moonlight above the jumbled landscape of ice on the Susitna River has been included in a competition on the US  National Weather Service Alaska’s Facebook page. The photo, taken on November 25th at 8 pm, captures an example of the crystal clear weather the upper Susitna valley has been experiencing for several weeks now. Morgan’s photo is one of 45 submissions, and the winner of the contest gets the bragging rights of being the new cover photo for the Weather Service Alaska’s page. Read More »

TKA Revenue Share Grants announced

The Talkeetna Community Council accepted the recommendations of the Revenue Share Committee for the distribution of 26,900 dollars in funds from the State to local projects to improve the community. Seven local residents that made up the committee heard the appeals of all eleven proposals on Monday, November 19th, and deliberated thoroughly on what to do with the money. Read More »

Record-setting Bachelor Auction one for the books

For 364 days they cost nothing, you can find them in the woods or saddle up to them at the local bar, but for one special night a year Talkeetna’s bachelors fetch a hefty price. And this year’s 32nd annual Talkeetna Bachelor Auction was the most successful ever. KTNA’s Melis Coady has more.
