2012 URISA GIS Hall of Fame Induction

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary conference in October 2012, the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) wishes to acknowledge the significant contributions which selected institutions have made to the field of geographic information systems and geographic information sciences.

The U.S. Geological Survey was one of the institutions selected by the URISA Past Presidents Committee for recognition. In February of 2012, the Committee proceeded to nominate USGS for induction into the GIS Hall of Fame:

"To be considered for the GIS Hall of Fame, an individual's or an organization's record of contribution to the advancement of the industry demonstrates creative thinking and actions, vision and innovation, inspiring leadership, perseverance, and community mindedness. In addition, nominees must serve as a role model for those who follow. URISA Hall of Fame Laureates are individuals or organizations whose pioneering work has moved the geospatial industry in a better, stronger direction." - www.urisa.org
A nomination statement highlighting the history of geographic information systems development and research across all of USGS was composed and submitted to the Committee this past spring. After careful consideration, USGS was selected for induction.

The induction ceremony will take place as part of URISA's GIS-Pro 2012 conference the week of September 30 through October 4, 2012, in Portland Oregon. Is it anticipated that Mark DeMulder, Director, National Geospatial Program, will be present to accept this award on behalf of USGS.

Congratulations to USGS and its geospatial community; past, present and future !
