Building Big

helps kids think about structures they see every day and the impact of technology on society. You can use the television series, website, and activity guide to help teach basic physical science concepts. The website includes animated interactive labs on basic engineering concepts and problem solving activities; historical overviews that introduce bridges, domes, skyscrapers, dams, and tunnels, and the forces that affect them; and a database of engineering marvels. Interesting Fact:

The Channel Tunnel, also called the Euro Tunnel or Chunnel, is a 32-mile rail tunnel beneath the English Channel. It took just three years for tunnel boring machines from France and England to chew through the chalky earth and meet hundreds of feet below the surface of the English Channel. Today, trains roar through the tunnel at speeds up to 100 miles per hour and it's possible to get from one end to the other in only 20 minutes.
