Discussion with the researchers behind the new projections for cancer-related medical spending in the year 2020. Featured are Drs. Angela Mariotto and Robin Yabroff from the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences.

Based on growth and aging of the U.S. population, medical expenditures for cancer in the year 2020 are projected to reach at least $158 billion (in 2010 dollars) -- an increase of 27 percent over 2010. If newly developed tools for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up continue to be more expensive, medical expenditures for cancer could reach as high as $207 billion. Projections are based on the most recent data available on cancer incidence, survival, and costs of care.

  • 17/4/2012 The increase in cost for cancer treatments in USA is caused by increase in costs of treatments too, no? So shouldn't those costs of treatments in USA decrease when the new treatments become more easily available? Cancer is a BURDEN for the people who have cancer first of all. It is not like those people can say, I don't need a new shirt, I will keep the money. Cancer comes uninvited for all people and those people still have the financial burden.

  • I wonder how much would it cost in the year 2020.but expected to be very effective at that time since more advance
