Biosketch:

Dr. Patel received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Baroda Medical College, India. He came to the United States as a post-doctoral Fellow at Ohio State University and as a Fellow in Diabetes at New York Medical College. After completing his training in Diabetes Research, he worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in lllinois and earned a M.A. in Health Facilities Management from Webster University. He subsequently held positions as the Director, Diabetes Research at the Barbara Kopp Research Center, and as an Instructor of Pharmacology at Meharry Medical College and the College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati. 

Dr. Patel’s 25-year research career was focused on the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular pharmacology, diabetes and its complications, and diabetogenic effects of ethanol. He has published scores of papers in national and international journals, and  has received several awards including a Gold Medal from the Indian Academy of Science for a paper based upon his Ph.D. work entitled, “Effects of Various Drugs on Insulin Antibodies”, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. Prior to coming to NIH, he was also employed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and at the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). Dr. Patel is a Past President of the District of Columbia Section of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine and the Association of Government Toxicologists. Dr. D.G. Patel joined the NIDDK Review Branch in 2004.
