Current Portfolio/Responsibilities:
In 2000 he was appointed to his current position as the Director Minority Health Research Coordination at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease; he has led the development of the Institute’s Strategic Plan On Minority Health Disparities, and monitoring implementation of the Plan. Some of the new initiatives under this plan include the Diabetes Education in American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal Schools (DETS) Program, the National High School Student Summer Research Program (NHSSSRP), the Network of Minority Research Investigators (NMRI), and the Short Term Education Program in Underrepresented Persons (STEP UP).
Previous Training and Experience:
Dr. Agodoa graduated from the Cornell University Medical College in 1971. He completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at the University of Washington Hospitals in Seattle, Washington, and a 3-year training in clinical and biomedical research in nephrology and renal pathology. He was Chief of the Nephrology Service at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, from 1976 to 1981. In 1981 he returned to the University of Washington and completed 2 years of clinical and research training in rheumatology and immunology. In 1983 he was assigned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center as Assistant Chief of the Nephrology Service and the Nephrology Training Program, and was also appointed to the Faculty of Medicine at USUHS. In 1985 he was appointed Director of the Military Medical Research Fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
In 1987 Dr. Agodoa was appointed Director of the Clinical Affairs Program in the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases, NIDDK. He was also research scientist in the Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology of NIDDK from 1987 to 1992. He has led several important clinical trials and studies in kidney diseases since his appointment to the NIH post. These include the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), the Hemodialysis Trial, and the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK).
