If your parent is among the nearly one in five Americans over the age of 65 with type 2 diabetes, he or she may need your help to manage the disease. Our listener, Peggy Lewis, knows this first hand:

“I think it’s so important to make sure that elderly parents who have diabetes check their numbers by doing their blood test every single morning, and if they don’t, you have to remind them and you have to let them know why it’s important to know your numbers. My mom uses a portable glucose monitor.”

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

To help parents with diabetes care, you can also check in with them to make sure they’re following their diabetes treatment. This should include a meal plan, exercise goals, and medications if prescribed.
