Did you know that having high blood pressure puts you at a greater risk for kidney disease?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Here’s what Sean Elliott, a retired NBA champion, has to say about high blood pressure and his battle with kidney disease:

“I don’t have a family history of kidney disease, but doctor, I want people to understand one thing about my kidney disease. For years I had high blood pressure and it was undiagnosed . . . I can go back as far as I can remember to my first physicals, when I was a kid in high school, and I had high blood pressure . . . When I started to look into kidney disease, it became very clear that high blood pressure and kidney disease go hand in hand.”

So take a tip from Sean. If you have high blood pressure – get tested for kidney disease.
