You’ve probably heard a lot about the problem of overweight and obese children lately. It’s important for parents to take notice, because the effects can follow children into their adult years.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
For parents, the facts about childhood overweight and obesity may feel startling. However, there’s plenty you can do to help your children stay on the healthy side. Start by playing an active role in their health. One way is to encourage healthy eating habits. Try these ideas:
- Ensure that your child gets a healthy breakfast every day. Skipping breakfast can leave them looking for less healthy foods later.
- Buy fewer soft drinks and snack foods like chips and candy.
- And plan healthy meals that you can eat as a family.
