Sodium is an essential dietary nutrient, but most of us eat much more than we need. This can lead to high blood pressure, which raises the risk for heart disease and kidney disease.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The latest Dietary Guidelines recommend that the following adults should reduce their daily sodium intake to 1500 milligrams:

  • adults who are 51 years or older.
  • African Americans of any age.
  • and anyone who has hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease.
Since most of the sodium in our diet comes from processed foods,
    • watch out for items like lunch meat, pizza, frozen dinners, packaged soups, and salad dressings.
    • and choose fresh, frozen, or canned foods without added salt.
