How can older Americans with diabetes feel their best? The answer may be as simple as ABC.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

If you’re an older adult with diabetes, managing it can bring a lot of benefits. You can feel more energetic, and prevent other health problems.

The key is to manage your diabetes ABC’s. A is your average blood glucose, also called your A1C. B is your blood pressure. And C is your cholesterol. Ask your health care team what your ABC numbers and targets should be. Also,

  • take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • ask your doctor if you need to check your blood glucose at home.
  • and stay at a healthy weight.
Getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days can help.
