Being pregnant can give women joy like nothing else. And for some, it can also lead to gestational diabetes, which should be treated and managed.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Women who develop diabetes during pregnancy have gestational diabetes, which can lead to problems for mother and baby if left untreated or uncontrolled.

Gestational diabetes occurs more frequently among women who

  • are African American.
  • are overweight or obese.
  • or who have a family history of diabetes

Your doctor will look for these and other risk factors, and may recommend tests early in your pregnancy. If you have gestational diabetes, your doctor can help you manage it.
