As African Americans, we’re at the highest risk for kidney failure. So, we should spread the word about kidney health.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Family reunions are the perfect time for sharing special recipes, stories, games for kids, and talking about important health issues, like kidney disease. Here’s one way to make the kidney connection at your family reunion: plan ahead to lead a 15-minute, group discussion on kidney disease. Talk to everyone about

  • who’s at risk
  • how to get tested
  • and what can be done if they have kidney disease

We have a Family Reunion Health Guide that can help you get started. To download the Guide, visit nkdep.nih.gov and click “get involved.” And you can also follow us on Twitter, @healthymoments. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
