With summer here, you may be ready to hit the road and the beach. If you have diabetes, that shouldn’t stop you – but you should plan ahead.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

For long road trips, people with diabetes should follow these tips:

  • Pack your medications in a cooler so they don’t overheat, and take a first aid kit.
  • If you use insulin, check your blood glucose before driving, and stop and check it every two hours.
  • Carry enough of your prescription medications with you to last your entire trip –and extra to cover any emergencies.
  • Always carry snacks like fruit, crackers, juice, or soft drinks in the car in case your blood glucose drops too low.
  • And keep your medical insurance card and emergency phone numbers handy.
