An unknown author once said – “You don’t have to brush your teeth – just the ones you want to keep.

” Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Diabetes can cause tooth and gum problems, and could even lead to tooth loss, but there are many steps you can take to protect your mouth:

  • Keep your blood sugar as close to normal as possible.
  • Floss gently, between your teeth, at least once a day, scraping each tooth several times.
  • Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush after each meal and snack. Turn the bristles against your gum line and brush gently.
  • Get regular dental exams.
  • And don’t smoke, because that can increase your risk for a bad case of gum disease.
