Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in adults. So if you have diabetes, look out for your eyes!

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

High blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol from diabetes can damage your eyes. If you have eye damage from diabetes, you may have any of these symptoms:

  • blurry or double vision
  • flashing lights, or dark or floating spots
  • pain or pressure in one or both of your eyes
  • and trouble seeing things out of the corner of your eyes
To avoid these problems, get a dilated eye exam at least once a year - even if you think your vision is okay. Early detection can prevent or delay blindness.
