For college students and recent grads, being on your own for the first time is a great feeling, but it can bring with it another first: the challenge of maintaining a healthy weight . . .
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
With little access to mom’s home-cooked meals, and the busy schedule of a student or young professional, it’s tempting to rely exclusively on fast food or junk food. Here are some better choices:
- Opt for fruits and vegetables. Add berries to your cereal or crunchy vegetables to a sandwich.
- Pick whole grains and fresh produce instead of processed foods, which are often loaded with fat and salt.
- Choose water and other low-cal drinks instead of sodas, sports drinks, and juices – which may be high in sugar.
And for more tips, visit our website at NIDDK, or MyMajicDC.com . This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
