For college students and recent grads, being on your own for the first time is a great feeling, but it can bring with it another first: the challenge of maintaining a healthy weight . . .

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

With little access to mom’s home-cooked meals, and the busy schedule of a student or young professional, it’s tempting to rely exclusively on fast food or junk food. Here are some better choices:

  • Opt for fruits and vegetables. Add berries to your cereal or crunchy vegetables to a sandwich.
  • Pick whole grains and fresh produce instead of processed foods, which are often loaded with fat and salt.
  • Choose water and other low-cal drinks instead of sodas, sports drinks, and juices – which may be high in sugar.

And for more tips, visit our website at NIDDK, or MyMajicDC.com Exit Disclaimer.  This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
