When kids are constipated and they can’t go, it can be just as painful for their parents.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Constipation in children can diminish their quality of life and cause family stress. Symptoms include difficult bowel movements and unusual body postures.
It’s often caused by withholding stool, brought on by stress over potty training or a reluctance to interrupt play. Diet and certain medications can also cause constipation.
If your child has symptoms for more than two weeks—go to the doctor. Go sooner if you see additional symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or blood in the stool. He or she can recommend the most appropriate treatments.
