Do you have a New Year’s resolution to get more physically active? Is it a realistic one that you can stick to all year?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

No matter what size you are, you can get more physically active, while having fun. The trick is to start small, set goals that you can keep, and build from there. Being physically active may help you live longer and prevent:

  • type 2 diabetes
  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • and high blood pressure

And if you have any of these health problems, being physically active may help improve your symptoms. To get started:

  • Sit less and be active for a few minutes more each day. Work up to 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
  • Dance to the radio.
  • And for extra motivation, try an activity video
